![]() I took this photo of a Monarch butterfly a couple of weeks ago here in Reno. It is a second generation Monarch butterfly originally from Mexico. The first migration generation left Mexico for southern state areas. Their offspring migrated north. This precious made it's way to Reno. Time to plant milkweed for them. Don’t you just love butterflies? I love the metaphor for self-transformation butterflies represent for us humans. I feel Springtime is about transformation and becoming a summertime butterfly. After being cocooned by the darkness and snow of winter days in Nevada we want to feel the warming sun on our backs and spread our wings and hit the trails and lakes. We also naturally want to purge the stuffiness of winter and welcome springtime by cleaning closets, garages, kitchen pantries, refrigerators and raking away the last of the dry leaves of winter to make space for the freshness of spring garden blooming harvest. The body requires a similar cleanup activity. Our ancestors ate what was local for them in the springtime. While the men were probably out hunting for meat and who knows, coming home days later because hunting is not easy, the women were feeding themselves and their children roots and weeds. They foraged for the wild green leaves of the season which were mostly bitter and astringent. The quality of bitter and astringent foods scrape the insides of the digestive tract for good detox and cleansing. Conveniently for us, we need just go to the market and purchase springtime foods such as dandelion greens, fennel, asparagus, watercress, and spinach. I read the caterpillar and the butterfly have the same exact DNA. They are the same organism but are receiving and responding to different organizing signals. We have those signals too. Our signals for transformation comes in whispers, gut feelings, intuition about what to do, say or eat or drink. Do you feel a natural urge to clean house? Inside and out? Are you attuned to your signals of nature for a springtime home and body cleanse? Are you a feeling more like a caterpillar or a butterfly these days? If you are feeling more like a winter caterpillar? Time to emerge from the cocoon of winter clothing and habits. Following are some ideas to help you spring into action so your sunny summertime wings to grow: 1.) Give away or throw away food you know should not be in your kitchen. Start only eating healthy. Like Marie Kondo the well known Japanese organizing consultant says “ hold the item, ask yourself: does it bring me health and joy?” If not. Remove it from your home. 2. Prepare a menu for your upcoming week of food and include leafy greens. Lot’s of organic greens. (See recipe ideas below) 3. Make a strong mental note to drink more good hydrating water this week. (Water which sits in a copper vessel for a while is healthy hydrating water) 4. Eat a diet of at least 80% organic plant based non processed foods. 5. For cooking use only therapeutic Ayurvedic Ghee. Ayurvedic Ghee is made from the milk of grass-fed cow’s milk yogurt. 6. Stock your pantry with cleansing herbs such as cinnamon, ginger, fennel, fenugreek, cayenne pepper, black pepper, parsley, and rosemary. (see recipe ideas below) 7. Start using a tongue scraper first thing in the morning before you drink any water. Tongue scraping is an excellent detox activity. 8. Oil pull with olive oil and a little bit of clove oil. (aids in detox) 9. Give yourself self-massage every day for skin & lymph detox. 10. Get a professional therapeutic massage at least once a month. More often if you feel achy and congested in the muscle and lymph tissue. 11. Walk three to five miles a day. 12. Do some yoga in the morning before you start your day 13. The very least, move the body any way you can. Assist it with its need for detox with some kind of heart-pumping exercise like jumping on a rebounder. (Remember your lymphatic system depends on you to move for it to work efficiently) The lymphatic system is like the body’s sewage system taking out old wastes from the body tissue. Recipe ideas for spring detox: Sauteed Spring Greens served with home cooked Chickpeas, Brown Rice and Vegan Cheese Saute a little onion with a little Ayurvedic Ghee until golden brown then add chopped spring greens and cook until tender (not overcooked) Serve with tablespoon of vegan cheese, brown rice cooked with dry or fresh Dill and freshly cooked chickpeas which have been soaked overnight then cooked until tender in water with a teaspoon of fenugreek seeds. Add Himalayan salt, pepper and chopped parsley for taste. Vegan Cheese 1 cup of Cashew Nuts (soaked overnight) 1 medium size carrot 2T lemon juice (fresh) 1 ½ T Paprika 1 Tbs Tahini butter ¾ cup of Nutritional Yeast Flakes Salt and Cayenne Pepper for taste. Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth then refrigerate. Warm healthy beverage ideas: Corriander and Fennel Beverage (replaces coffee) Dry lightly roasted Coriander seeds Fennel Seeds Brew in a pot of water a mixture of Fennel Seeds and Coriander seeds and serve hot with jaggery (unrefined sugar) or stevia for taste. Spicy Late Boil in a cup of nut milk a pinch of Cinnamon, Nutmeg, Cardamom, turmeric, and black pepper. Add a little natural sweetener for taste. (I use either coconut sugar or Jaggery) Need home support with a Yoga Health Coach? I help you get started by spending a good part of the day with you. ![]() https://mailchi.mp/a3e2d8d06d73/intelligent-touch?e=813ff24c8d Intelligent Intuitive Touch Through my many years (20 to be exact) working as a massage therapist, my hands have developed a high level of intelligence and some may say 'a strong intuitive’ sense. It’s totally beyond any reasoning I can ever explain. My most favorite teacher was Dr. John Upledger. Founder of Upledger Institute. The Upledger Institute has taught to date many thousands of therapists including doctors, physical therapists, and chiropractors the art of CranioSacral Therapy. In his CranioSacral Therapy 2, Beyond the Dura book, he writes in the chapter 'Localized Tissue Intellect Memory and Emotion'. “How many of you body workers do your best work when you just give your hands-free reign to do what they want? Perhaps you are distracted and see later that you have done something with the patient without having consciously decided to do it. I have this experience almost daily. I used to think I was letting my lower brain, or my right brain, do the job. But perhaps my hands simply do the job without guidance from the spinal cord or any other part of the central nervous system. “ Dr. J.Upledger. Some time ago a client brought her aging mother to see me for the relief of her hip pain. My guess her mother was about eighty years of age then. I touched her and immediately my hands retracted away from her body. I told the mother and daughter I could not be of any help as I believed relief for the pain was totally out of my scope of practice. I told them my feeling was she may have a hip fracture. They left. A year later I saw the daughter in a mall by chance. I asked her how her mother was. She said “Oh I was meaning to call you and give you an update. You were right. I took my mother back to her doctor and the doctor said it was muscular pain and would not give her an X-ray. I then took my mother back to her previous doctor and even that doctor said, it was muscular pain. Frustrated, I took her back to the other doctor and insisted they give her an X-ray. They did because I demanded they do. Lo and behold, the radiologist diagnosed her with a hip fracture.” Thank goodness for the intelligence in my hands. I have many, many stories similar to this one, My hands have done the thinking and talking and they seem to know what western medical science diagnostics reveal. Is this not amazing how the human hand can develope this incredible intelligence? I encourage you to use your hands for feedback about your health and also why not use them to heal yourself. Trust in the answers your hands will give you. It's not hokey pokey weirdo stuff. It's real. If you feel the need for CranioSacral Therapy, I have a few openings this week coming to see you for a CranioSacral Therapy session? Mention this email when you book your CranioSacral Therapy. The philosophy of yoga teaches us if we want to know more about our creator we need only look into the body for answers. Your skin. How incredible it is. For a moment, become aware of the complex nature of what it is and how complex and sensitive it is. The slightest tickle of a feather or the luxurious sensory experience of coconut oil and lavender bath or the slightest breeze upon your face is mesmerizing. Billions of years of evolution make up the human body. How complex nervous system is and, your DNA keeps a record of all your ancestors. Perhaps you can see your great grandfather's nose on your face? All creatures are having a sensory experience here on Earth and the Human experience is the most sophisticated of them all. Yoga philosophy teaches us we have five layers or sheaths. Every aspect of the human system, including the mind, is seen as a body, and yoga is a technology to transform it. The five layers are the physical body, the mind-body, the energy body, the intuitive-intelligence body, and the bliss body. Yoga teaches us to reach into the bliss body and experience non-duality. Union. An all-encompassing feeling of everyone and everything. The most divine expression of Love. Love is what you are. The philosophy of Yoga teaches us to love our body, nurture it, feed it well, expose it to sensory experiences which are pleasing in nature, exercise it well, expand the lung capacity with fresh air and pay attention to its needs and wants. Overstimulation of sound, food, physical activities, and mental strain will start the break the system down and illness then happens. Fall in love with your body all over again. Creator’s love is no further away from us than your own body. By engaging in the body's intuitive intelligence layer and loving all aspects of it, health and happiness are yours to enjoy. ![]() Food For Cures We truly can heal ourselves. Our body has the capacity to be well and stay well… with our help. Readers Digest published a fabulous book named Food Cures – Fight disease with your fork. Abundant with nuggets of food curing wisdom for conditions such as: acne, allergies, Alzheimer’s disease, anemia arthritis, asthma, ADHD, breast cancer, cancer, cataracts, colds and flu, constipation, colon cancer, depression diabetes, fatigue, gallstones, gout, gum disease, heartburn, heart disease, high blood pressure, infertility, IBS, Insomnia, kidney stones, leg cramps, lung cancer, lupus, macular degeneration, memory loss, menopause, menstrual problems, migraine, nausea, obesity, osteoporosis, prostate cancer, prostate enlargement, psoriasis, sinusitis, stroke, ulcers, urinary tract infections, wrinkles and yeast infections. Wouldn’t you rather eat bananas, potatoes and raisins for your High Blood Pressure than take a prescription pill with side effects? Or how about peanuts, cheese and warm milk with honey for insomnia? Got kidney stones? Drinking enough water with lemon will most certainly keep you from getting them and if you have them water is a cure. Did you know, on any given day the kidneys filter about 200 quarts of blood to remove salts, water, and waste products that form when the body processes food and liquids? The refuse is waste and it’s medium for transportation - is Water. The human body contains approximately 72% water. Heartburn food cures are Cinnamon, turmeric, water, ginger, and slippery elm tea. How about as we cure disease with our fork and in the meantime save our planet from the doomsday forecast. Leading scientists have a dark forecast for the future of our planet if we humans continue to pillage and rape it as we are doing so now. Our rain forests (our second set of lungs) are being trimmed away for soybean cattle food and palm oil and soon water will become our new ‘gold’. In this book, I am currently reading - named Protest Kitchen fight injustice save the planet and fuel your resistance one meal at a time by Carol J. Adams and Virginia Messina. They write: Factory farm animals live in crowded in small spaces, denied feed, live in unnatural lighting and live in their own waste. Replacing animal food with plants is the most effective dietary change you can make for the health of the planet. Let’s not make our compulsions our freedom. Pay attention to compulsive eating of food you know hurts you and maybe also the planet. True freedom lies not in what we can do without regard for others and the planet or being controlled by compulsions of the mind. True Freedom is being freed of all compulsive behaviors. Freedom equates to conscious living. True Joy is knowing we are contributing Joy to the world. Paying it forward. Let us make 2019 a joyous one for as many as possible. Let us all become a mother to the world. She feeds our body well. Cultures who believe the creator is also within the earth, they tread lightly with a sense of sacredness upon her. The movie Avatar describes this beautifully. I am teaching an introduction to Ayurveda cooking and lifestyle one Sunday every month at the Reno Buddhist Center. The first urban workshop is January 13th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm. We will be preparing super delicious Ayurveda meals, and I will teach simple ways to Meditate and Movement for mind/body health. Please join us. We have room for only 5 more people for our January 13th retreat. Other future tentative dates for more urban retreats are planned for" February 10th, March 10th, May 5th, June 2nd and July 14th. ![]() The Ayurvedic clock is based on the natural circadian rhythm of nature. Living a life based on the principles of circadian rhythm (the Ayurveda clock) supports the system for optimal health. The clock is based on 4-hour increments of time. 3 cycles of 4 hour time increments during day-time (sun up) and similarly 3 cycles during night time (sun down). Each increment of time is dominated by either Earth and Water, Fire and Water Ether and Air These waves of energy support and influence the lives of all life forms on the planet. The Ayurvedic clock is based the cycle of the sun and the moon, in relationship to our planet earth. Neuron receptors in our brain trigger certain biological functioning in our body when the retina of our eyes detect morning time natural light. This phenomenon of recognition the sunrise starts up the bodily systems engine. Heightened sense of awareness of these body signals followed by appropriate action supports a healthy life. Mind, Body and Spirit. The first segment of time for sun up hours according to the clock is from 6:00 am - 10:00 am. During this time the body’s natural processes are in sync with the nature of Kapha energy. Kapha energy is dominated by the energy of earth and water. Earth and Water elements are heavy, descending, watery and sticky energy. The dew forms on leaves during this time of day and animals begin to roam, hop, skip and fly in forage for food and water. For our system to function optimally we need only to hydrate with a tall glass of water upon arising to assist the system in it's descending energy. Doing so, allows for a complete bowel movement elimination within one hour of waking up, or at least before 9:00 am. The denseness of Kapha energy needs to be released by some form of cardio exercise. Whether it be an asana yoga practice, walking, running or going to the gym. It is an opportunistic time to prime the body to receive energy for the day. The next four-hour segment is from 10:00 am - 2:00 pm. The elements of fire and water dominate this segment of time. The fire of our digestion is our ability to transform food into human cells. A fun easy way to grasp this concept is to think of it as if the cook comes to the kitchen around 10:00 am and turns the stove on and then turns the stove off around 2:00 pm. This stove is our digestive fire. Which means our body is firing itself for to be nourished by food. The liver an organ dominated by the element of fire becomes activated producing bile to digest heavier protein rich, oily/fatty food. Since it is the right time for digesting heavy food, the body’s energies need to be concentrated in the digestive area therefore; it is not an opportune time for exercise. The mind this time is active as well, which is perfect for detail oriented thinking and planning. Eating heavy meals past 2:00 pm is burdensome for the system as the liver starts its decline in producing bile and by 9:00 pm it’s at a bile-producing crawl. 2:00 pm - 6:00 pm is predominated by Vata energy. Vata energy has the qualities associated with air. It’s the systems time for quicker thinking and since the digestive fires are diminishing and the liver is reducing it’s bile output, eating a lighter dinner supports the night time’s internal body ‘house cleaning’ time. This air dominant energy needs to be supported with good hydration. Vata time is also a time for light exercise, heart centered conversation with family and friends or perhaps even write a book or music. For creative writers, it may be a perfect time to write since the energy is light and the mind is very active. One can see the air influence in nature as afternoon dry winds. The next segment of time moves us to the after daylight time. 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm This time is dominated by Kapha energy. In this case, the descending energy is about settling in for a good night's sleep energy. The system begins its production of melatonin, which is a hormone to promote healthy deep restful sleep. When we are in tune with this energy there is a natural tendency to begin to feel sleepy between 9:00 pm and 10:00 pm. The digestive fire is minimal and the body begins to wind itself down. To support this energy, an earlier lighter dinner is required as well as activities, which support a winding down process such as an evening walk or light housework. To be in bed by 10:00 pm and asleep by 10:30 the latest supports the system immensely. Because the next wave of energy to move through our system is the energy of Pitta. Pitta as mentioned before is dominated by the energy of Water and Fire. Pitta time of the night from 10:00 pm to 2:00 am is the systems detoxifying time. The liver's energy is fire energy. The nighttime fire energy is transformational energy. This fire of transformation is for the transformation of food eaten during the day, to transform it into living healthy body tissue. The system is also activated to purge it of any toxins by releasing them into the colon for morning elimination. We can think of this Pitta time of the night as intense house cleaning time. Suppose we are eat late at night and make a mess of the kitchen, how do we suppose the cleaning crew can do their work efficiently and clean house? This fire energy of the night lifts the veil of our subconscious programming. A perfect time for decongesting the mind and perhaps colorful dreams may appear in dream state too. The last of the segments of time to discuss is Vata energy time of the early morning. 2:00 am - 6:00 am is called Vata time. Vata is air dominant energy time. Air energy is light. Sleep becomes lighter and dreams more vivid. The body is preparing for an active day cycle. Generally people who have had a good night of sleep will naturally wake during these hours feeling refreshed and tuned into life's vast current of energy. For people who like to meditate, other dimensions of reality are easily accessible during this time. Air time as is during the day is creative energy time. The brain is light and thinking is quick. Air is dry energy and this is why the system requires hydration upon awakening. It is actually easier to wake before 6:00 am than after 6:00 am because Kapha energy can make one sleepy again. Time to rise and shine. And witness the dawn. Q. An Apple A Day - Does it really keep the doctor away? It’s true, an apple a day for sure helps keep the doctor away. Make that an organic, fresh apple. Living a ‘mostly’ organic lifestyle will certainly enhance your success for healthier living and less need to visit your doctor. Nowadays we are bombarded with suggestions and subliminal marketing strategies from companies hoping to make us dive into our pocketbooks and hand out our money in exchange for a quick fix, easy ways to make us feel better. Let's face it, there really is no quick fix and easy way. Maybe for a few hours or a few days, we might feel better but in the long run, our lifestyle, habits and our environment rule our health. Did you know the human body is the most sophisticated biotechnological thing on the planet? It took millions and millions of years of evolution to finally reach its evolutionary peak we appreciate today. This is a fun video made of man's evolution? click here Where do we grow from here? Only in Consciousness can we grow. Dr Bruce Lipton speaks of "The human body is a skin covered petri dish", And a very sophisticated one too which we use to navigate ourselves and animate ourselves with, in this 3D time, space reality. Why do us modern humans think it is okay to override the body’s intelligence and natural impulses of what to eat, when to eat, why to eat, when to rest, when to be active etc.? Living our fast-paced world the body needs to keep up with the demands. In many cases, if we tire it out way too much, it does not manage to keep up and it will pull the plug on us if we don't listen to its needs. It sends us signals all the time. The numbers of autoimmune diseases are on the rise, as you may know. We are creating dis-ease in our system by means of an unhealthy lifestyle and the system wears down creating inflammation, cancer, emotional ups and downs and who knows what else. Our diseases are our wakeup calls. The body talks. We must listen. Living a fast-paced hectic life goes against the grain of the body’s intelligence. I believe the body can adapt to a certain degree to the modern day lifestyle, however, it will draw its line and when it does, (it usually is not nice) we either have to change our ways (our habits) or jump ship. Back to the ‘Eat An Organic Apple A Day’ will keep the doctor away is an organic truth. AARP and WebMD suggests eating apples with the skin on is super healthy for us. I agree. My suggestions for healthier living are:
Need support? I coach women how to up-level their lives by teaching them healthy Ayurveda Yogi habits for Healthy Thriving, Joyful Living. www.wisdomtothrive.com Be well, my friend. My goal in life is to teach and help people take better care of themselves because we are all worth it!!! I look forward to seeing you very soon. Namaste’ Brenda Malana Matthew Burger Did you know our emotional freedom begins in our gut? We all want to experience stable emotions all the time. Perfecting our digestion is the gateway to our emotional freedom. Excellent digestion equals emotional freedom. Nowadays there are studies to prove there is a strong connection between our digestion and our emotions. (Molecules of Emotion by Candice Pert). Modern science is finally catching up with what Ayurveda has been teaching us for thousands of years. Ayurveda teaches us our digestive process takes 30 days and how well we do or don’t digest is the source of disease, therefore, we have to maximize good digestion, especially living in today's toxic world. Excellent health requires excellent digestion. Our molecules of emotion are concentrated in our brain, our respiratory tract, our gut and in our skin. These receptors for the molecules of our emotion are also responsible for our immune system, our hormone system, our psychology, our nervous system as well as our endocrine system and if we have blocked up, pent-up emotions they can and do cause disease finally proving ancient wisdom with modern science. Therefore if we want better mood stability and increase joy we must bring our body into a state of balance. Doing so promotes more awareness and mental clarity for us to deal with life and all its stressors. The question Ayurveda asks us is: What are we projecting onto the screen of our life? What emotional patterns are we experiencing again and again and again? We know for a fact now they are messing with our lives big time and what’s more, these negative emotions are stored in our fat! Ayurveda talks about mental Ama. Mental Ama is our stored negative emotions and they cause disease.
Surviving well in today’s modern world we really need to become good fat burners and good digesters. Problem is we have lost the ability to be good fat burners. Burning fat, means burning calm fuel, stable fuel, non-emergency fuel, sleep through the night fuel, it’s the fuel that makes us content in our skin and it’s the fuel that releases not only toxins but also our molecules of emotion. Have you ever felt the need to cry while doing yoga or while receiving a massage? If so, most likely you were releasing old pent-up emotions from your body tissue. Be kind to yourself give yourself a self-massage every day with either sesame oil or coconut oil. (depends on your dosha) Did you know giving our self a loving self-massage stimulates the production of a powerful hormone called oxytocin in our system? Oxytocin is also known as our happy drug. It is the hormone that underlies trust and is the antidote to depressive feelings. Take care of yourself, become good digesters, good fat burners and give yourself a loving touch massage every day. Try this very simple breath technique 10 times a day.Modern day life has us all feeling like we are being chased by bears. Our cells don't know the difference. We know there are no bears chasing us, but sometimes it sure feels like it. Whether paying bills, managing relationships, paying taxes, making deadlines, raising children you name it. We have them and some of us are even crazy enough to make up bears that don’t even exist by over worrying and stressing about things we have absolutely no control over like the price of gas. I find myself worrying too about things like snow storms and traffic safety. Do you find most times you don’t even have control over your very own mind? Does your mind drive you crazy? We are living in a world congested with environmental pollutions. Tabloids, news, social media is another kind of mind pollution. All these pollutions are having an extremely negative effect on our opportunity to experience more joy. Our job is to filter as much of it out as possible with organic food and organic news. Do you agree with me, that the time has come for us to stop the madness and take a look at what our crazy minds have conjured up in the name of safety and what we can do to rescue ourselves from ill health down the road? Most diseases are caused by negative thinking such as anger, grievances, jealousy, getting even etc. Ayurveda is ultimately about becoming a spiritual warrior. It says what affects you is your karma, your opportunity for transformational awareness. Our job is to become more self-aware. I would love to teach you a very powerful yogi meditation technique for increased awareness and a calmer mind. Doing this powerful meditation technique 10 times a day will literally transform your life starting Now. Only 30 powerful seconds, 10 times a day is all it takes to become more self-aware, breathing in the midst of chaos. Here is what you do: Simply breath deeply in and out 30 times then relax keep your eyes closed for another 30 seconds. Then slowly open your eyes. Try it now. Do you feel different? Does the room look brighter? Do you notice you have fewer thoughts now or maybe no thoughts? When the mind stops thinking, we start feeling. Breathing deeply for 30 seconds oxygenates brain (we need more oxygen) and the thinking part of the brain goes to the background and feeling part of the brain comes to the foreground carrying a little bit more awareness for us to have a better more productive day. Do it before work, shopping, home, in the car. Even while parking the car. Take this easy breathing meditation practice into your home your office, wherever you are to reset yourself and create calm in the midst of battle. Do it 10 times a day it will change your life. You can do it. It’s powerful.
Become a spiritual warrior. Take control of your mind and stop it's crazy thinking dead in its tracts. With awareness, we can take better action. |
